Truman State University is a public liberal arts and sciences university in Kirksville, which is the county seat of Adair County, in the US state of Missouri, having a population of nearly 17 000 inhabitants, estimated during the 2000 census. Truman State was officially established in 1867, as the First Missouri Normal School and Commercial College, by Joseph Baldwin, who was considered a pioneer in education. The institution adopted its current name in 1996, being previously known as Northeast Missouri State University.
Truman currently has an enrollment of nearly 6000 students, and according to U.S. News & World Report's ''America's Best Colleges 2009'', it is the number one public university in the Midwest region Master's Category. Truman State University offers its students educational programs in numerous fields of study, focusing primarily on liberal arts and sciences.
Truman State's athletic teams are known as the Truman Bulldogs, who compete in NCAA Division II, in 21 sports, of which 11 are for men and 10 are for women. The Bulldogs have experienced success in many of the sports in which they compete, over the years, among their most recent ones being 4 regional championships for women's volleyball, a regional berth for men's basketball in 2006, and undefeated regular seasons for both men's and women's soccer.
The distinctive colors of the Truman Bulldogs are purple and white and their mascots are Spike and Simone.

Laughlin - a leading American eugenicist in the first half of the 20th century, General John J. ''Black Jack'' Pershing - American Army Officer who achieved rank of General of the Armies, Mary Rhodes Russell - Judge on the Supreme Court of Missouri, appointed in 2004 and retained in 2006, and Kevin C. Fitzpatrick - non-fiction writer best known for his research of Dorothy Parker and the Algonquin Round Table, among others.
